iHandy Carpenter combines five carpentry tools into a single app for iPhones and iPads. It has a three-dimensional plumb bob level to measure vertical lines, a ruler calibrated in inches and centimeters, a zero to 180 degree protractor, a bubble level for two-dimensional surfaces, and a surface level that works on three dimensional surfaces—just lay your phone flat on any surface to find out if it is level. Visually, the tools look fantastic. It's a great app to have in your pocket if you want to save weight, or if you want to have a backup in case you forget your tools one day.
The lightest, prettiest, and handiest carpenter tool in the world.iHandy website
$2.99 for the full version or you can try out the bubble level for free by downloading iHandy Level.
Home improvements or professional carpenters who need a backup option if they forget their tools one day.
This is a great app—and it's there when you need it. If your need for accuracy is greater than what an iPhone can provide then you probably already have the hardware. When you don't have it with you, this will give you a good idea of whether something is level or plumb.Annieofbluegables
The tools in the app look like real tools and work well. The level has proved to be handy on many occasions. And the surface level is something that you don't need often, but when you do, nothing else is going to do the job.Dent De Leon
Fall Safety App
Fall Safety App is a great safety net to add to your Apple phone or watch if your job involves high exposure, such as roofing or structural work. The app uses your phone's built-in accelerometer to detect if you have just fallen from a dangerous height. If you have, and you do not respond within 30 seconds to confirm you are OK, the app will alert your designated emergency contact by phone, email (if the internet is available), and text message. If you do need someone's help, the app will share the precise details of your location so you can be found as quickly as possible. You can also choose when you want the app to run, so it will shut itself off during the evenings and weekends if you want it to.

I work on roofs every day and while I use fall protection (ropes, harness, anchors) running this app gives me great peace of mind...This app runs smoothly in the background with very minimal battery use. I can run all my other apps and stream podcasts and music without any conflict with its performance.?PowderHound250
I downloaded this app for my grandfather falling out of bed, and it doesn't work for this purpose YET, but after receiving great customer support, I am excited to see where this app goes in the future. If you are a professional working at heights I can say with confidence that this is the app for you.Bassobese

Pitch Gauge is a handy mobile app you can use to measure the pitch of a roof without ever having to climb a ladder. It could be a useful backup option for roofers if you ever leave your tools behind or want to make quick calculations from the ground. The app uses the camera on your phone or tablet to allow you to align a white line on your screen with the roof in front of you and calculate the pitch. Take a photo when the line is steady and the angle is stamped onto the image saved in your photos folder. Alternatively, if you are already on the roof you want to measure, just lay your phone on the incline to get a reading. The app also has a built in square calculator which uses a roof's length, width, pitch, and cut level to calculate the quantity of materials you need. A big upgrade due out in 2016 will add project management, communication, and mapping tools to the app, which will also work in three languages: English, Spanish, and French.
Roofing is a tough business. To save yourself time and energy, download Pitch Gauge today.Pitch Gauge
Anyone who needs to take a quick pitch measurement of a roof, especially if you don't want to carry extra tools with you or use a ladder to take your measurements on top of a building. Version 3.0 promises new features which will definitely widen the app's appeal.
Great for measuring roof pitch from ground level. This app is very helpful in my work as a solar consultant. It gives a reasonable estimate of roof pitch which helps me estimate the intensity of the sunlight which will hit the solar panels in my energy modeling software, until we can send an engineer up to the roof to measure the pitch using traditional tools. Those measured values have been pretty close to what this app gives, but it is also highly dependent on the quality and condition of the sensors in your phone, of course.Dennis Meizys
Awesome app! Easy to use...amazing. Instant information with precision accuracy. Time saver. Disaster preventer. Effortless. Can't wait for 3.0.FranAnne

I just installed iHandy because a friend of mine kept recommending it instead of Google Translate. I tried it out on the free app at first and liked it.Lunapie2010
Excellent when you are traveling or just needing a quick translation.appPicker
I upgraded to the $2 version app a while ago. It worked perfect and it sure does help me translate things into Spanish when I'm having trouble pronouncing words and helping me improve on my Italian, but the app has recently told me to check my internet connection.pat_flores
